Blue Cross Blue Shield

In 2019, Atrius Health and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts announced a 7-year agreement aligned around an advanced alternative payment model to co-create a new kind of health care experience that’s simpler, easier to navigate, higher quality, and more affordable for patients.

Atrius Health, like Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, is a not-for-profit organization committed to high quality and slowing the growth of health care costs. Atrius Health was also one of the first providers to participate in our Alternative Quality Contract (AQC), which reshaped health care in Massachusetts and across the country, so we see tremendous value in working together to advance the goal of better care at a more affordable cost with an experience that helps patients better navigate the health system.

The agreement builds on the innovative work the two organizations have done together beginning a decade ago with Blue Cross’s pioneering Alternative Quality Contract (AQC), in which Atrius Health was one of the first providers to participate.

Focus areas for Atrius Health and Blue Cross will include developing more convenient ways of accessing care and navigating the healthcare system, more integrated population health programs, use of innovative technologies, and administrative simplification.

Blue Cross and Atrius Health hope to take the innovations they develop in this non-exclusive agreement and expand them to serve as a model for how health plans and provider groups can align around improving quality, convenience and affordability.

The Permanente Federation

In 2019, Atrius Health announced that the organization will be recognized as the first “allied member” of The Permanente Federation, effective June 1, 2019. Atrius Health and the Federation will build a relationship to advance quality, safety, patient experience, research, teaching, growth, affordability and sustainability, and to preserve the advantages of the multispecialty group practice model.

Under this agreement the two organizations will remain independent entities but have recognized “the tremendous synergies across our respective practices and share the belief that we can catalyze and accelerate our improvements through a formal and robust collaboration.”

Our relationship with Atrius Health as the first allied member of The Permanente Federation creates an exciting opportunity to advance our common goal of providing person-centered, high-quality, affordable care,” said Richard S. Isaacs, MD, FACS, co-Chief Executive Officer, The Permanente Federation, LLC. Atrius Health’s focus on innovation also aligns well with our commitment to accelerating research and performance improvements across the Permanente Medical Groups.
