Leveraging Technology
Craig Monsen, MD, MS
Chief Medical Information Officer
Atrius Health’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve practice efficiency, enable high-quality care delivery, and collaborate with innovative partners is particularly noteworthy. Atrius Health’s strategic focus on the pragmatic application of information technology is one of the many reasons physicians decide to join Atrius Health. It is one of the main reasons why I joined Atrius Health.
When one of our predecessors, the Harvard Community Health Plan, opened its doors to patients over 50 years ago, it did so equipped with COSTAR, one of the nation’s first electronic health records (EHR).
Continuing our early adoption of the EHR, Atrius Health was among the first customers of the Epic electronic health record platform over 25 years ago (and the first to adopt in Massachusetts), accelerating it to early national recognition as a Davies Award recipient. Atrius Health was one of the first ambulatory practices to achieve HIMSS Level 7, the highest level of maturity in EHR use.
Similarly, Atrius Health’s enduring commitment to population health and value-based care have led to multiple investments in a robust data warehouse that combines the depth of EHR-based clinical data with the breadth of administrative claims data needed for comprehensive insights about our patients and the populations we serve. As a physician and Atrius Health’s Chief Medical Information Officer, I am inspired by my colleagues to consider how our information systems can better enable high reliability care that does not add extra work.
In 2020, extensive prior experience with video visit technology integrated with our Epic electronic health record enabled the rapid and robust expansion of video visit capacity as part of our organization’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This allowed our patients access to the vast majority of clinical services during a time when physical distancing was critical. Beyond Covid-19, Atrius Health believes telehealth will remain an important part of our care model, allowing greater choice for our patients for how and where they can connect with their clinical care teams.
I am delighted to share with you several examples of ongoing work in the areas of Practice Efficiency, Quality and Innovation that help Atrius Health create a sustainable practice environment for continuous, comprehensive, and well-coordinated care.
Clinician Wellness
Karim Awad, MD, MBA
Medical Director, Clinician Wellness
Chief of Sleep Medicine
At Atrius Health, we are committed to creating a healthcare organization that is a great place to work and ensures that our clinicians are fulfilled in their careers.
Atrius Health has adopted the Stanford Medicine model of the reciprocal domains of physician well-being, which pursues programs in increasing efficiency of practice, stewarding a culture of wellness, and promoting personal resilience to reduce the incidence of clinician burnout across the practice.
Our wellness work has focused on two major domains. First, we want to create a practice where you work at the top of your license, have proper support, a streamlined EMR, and a healthy work-life balance. This is done by automating and delegating some of your tasks (such as automating prescription refills) and creating true teamwork.
Second, we are focused on improving our culture including how we lead and how we engage and receive input from clinicians on important decisions. This is to ensure that you are heard and that your opinion matters. Through multiple opportunities like speed dating, networking events, and facilitated dinners, we also give you the chance to meet other clinicians and develop meaningful relationships.
Our goal is to create a work environment that is supportive, fulfilling, and brings joy and meaning back to the practice of medicine.
